TNA
The Royal Treatment: RAW (8.02.04)
By Peter Kostka
Aug 3, 2004, 00:01

Live from San Antonio, Texas

The opening video is interrupted by Triple HHH, who storms out to the ring and laments that his bit to become nine-time champion was ruined by a moron, a dolt, a simpleton. Someone who cant even comprehend what he has done. He wants to finish things with Eugene and promises that he wont leave until he comes out. He screams out his name Brando yelling for Stella, but William Regal comes out instead, telling HHH that Eugene isnt here, but lets him know who told Eugene to interfere: It was me, sunshine. He reminds HHH how they were partners in WCW, and how Regal was somewhat of a mentor for him. Usually he would applaud HHH evilness, but when you take advantage of a disadvantaged boy, you get on Regals bad side very quickly. If HHH wants to fight, he will be more than happy to oblige. HHH seems to accept, so weve got a match tonight.

Thoughts: Although we kind of went through this a couple of weeks ago already, both guys brought some emotion into this exchange. Regal rocks on the mic, anyway, so it was great to see him stand up to HHH and pretty much cement his face turn.

This Week: Benoit, Jericho and Edge face Batista, Orton and Flair

- Da Coach eliminates Camille from the Diva Search. Later, the remaining finalists will have 20 seconds to convince people to vote for them.

Rhyno and Tajiri vs. La Resistance (non-title match)

Rhyno and Tajiri dominate the whole (very short) match, which leads to Rhyno Gore-ing Conway while Tajiri rolls up Sylvan for the pin about a minute and a half in.

Rating: 2/10

Thoughts: Well, it definitely made the face team very strong and credible, and a Summerslam tag match is probably in the cards, so this did what is was designed to do.

- Randy Orton promo. He believes in destiny, that the reason he lost the IC title to Edge was to become the youngest World Champion in history (24 to Brock Lesnars 25). Chris Benoit may be the best now, but at SummerSlam, hell just be another legend added to the list.

- Smackdown Rebound

- Lita and Stacy Keibler chat in the locker room until Matt Hardy join them, asking for a word alone with Lita. Hes decided to stay with her and start a family, proposing to her for what seems like the 6th time.

Tyson Tomko (w/Trish Stratus) vs. Rosey (w/Stacy Keibler)

Rosey controls to start and sends Tomko to the outside. Back in, Tomko takes control and chokes, getting a two count. Tomko whips, but runs into a boot and a flying legdrop from Rosey, which Stacy celebrates with a cartwheel. He hits a spinebuster and goes for the kill, but Trish hops onto the apron and Rosey plays the stupid face and goes after her, falling to a boot to the face for the pin at 4:08.

Rating: 1/10

Thoughts: Tomko is completely useless without Christian around. This feud with Rosey seems to have a case of Somethingtodo-itis, which includes Stacy, who would be better suited hosting the Diva search or something.

Why are there commercials still telling you to tune in to see who gets eliminated?

The Highlight Reel (guest: Edge

Edge apparently asked to appear on the Reel to find out why Chris Jericho eliminated him from the battle royal last week. Before they get into that, Jericho informs him that he will defend the IC title at SummerSlam against Batista and Jericho in a triple-threat match. As for last week, it was all business, and Edge would have done the same thing. Edge thinks it was just Jerichos ego taking control yet again, forcing him to watch Jericho get dumped by Orton, saying I havent seen you dumped that badly since Trish Stratus. That gets Chris dander up, which leads to a brawl, where Edge spears Jericho and grabs a chair, but changes his mind. He goes to help him up, but gets popped in the mouth for his trouble.

Thoughts: This actually did well to begin to plant the seeds for an Edge heel turn, but keep it seem like Edge is just miffed at Jericho. Strong promo work from everyone involved tonight.

Triple HHH vs. William Regal

Regal jumps HHH on the stage and beats him to the announce table before sending him tumbling down the ramp. HHH tries to fight back, but gets sent into the steps. Regal rolls him into the ring but gets knocked cold by one shot from HHH. The ref calls for the bell after he sees why: brass knuckles. HHH slides outside and grabs the sledge, but Regal fights back, going for the knuckles and getting a sledge shot instead. HHH works him over, leaving Regal a bloody mess for the medics to take care of. HHH heads up the ramp as they start to wheel Regal out of there, but he walks to the stretcher to give Regal a message for Eugene, telling him that Eugene can expect more of the same and no one can stop him before tipping over the stretcher and marching up the ramp, screaming at the crowd on the way.

No Rating

Thoughts: Another match to simply further an angle, but it was done fairly well. Psycho HHH is fairly entertaining, and the beating was pulled off very well.

- As HHH cleans up in the bathroom, Eric Bischoff gives him Eugene at SummerSlam, which causes a sick smile to spread over HHHs face.

- The Diva hopefuls give their (pre-recorded) speeches. No one cares, naturally.

- Kane confronts Lita backstage (after a producer tells them to go. Damn production errors). He will face Matt at SummerSlam. After Lita shows her confidence in Matt, Kane decides to up the ante: whoever wins the match marries Lita. She accepts immediately.

Kane vs. Maven

Maven tries to use his speed to start and knocks Kane to the floor, but a dive is met with a boot, and Kane destroys him back in the ring, finishing with a chokeslam for the pin at 2:45. He grabs the mic and promises victory in the first ever Till Death Do Us Part match.

- JR and King Lawler run down the SummerSlam card so far, and the Diva hopefuls parade around on the stage once more.

Randy Orton, Batista and Ric Flair vs. Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and Edge

Edge sprints past his teammates and jumps Orton to start, choking him with his jacket and hitting a dropkick before tagging Jericho in. Orton takes him down with an uppercut and tags Flair, who gets worked over by not only Jericho, but Benoit as well, as he ping-pongs between them for a bit before flopping to the mat. He regains his bearings and spits at Benoit, challenging him to come in. They trade chops, and Flair gets an eyepoke, but Benoit scores a backslide for 2. Flair takes control and tags Batista, which leads to the heels working Benoit over for a bit, focusing on the back and sternum, which HHH wore out in last weeks match. Benoits break comes when Batista misses a charge and Benoit tags out to Jericho. He escapes a powerslam and goes for the Walls, settling for a bulldog and Lionsault after Batista easily powers out. All six guys brawl and the faces dump the heels to the outside, leading to a break.

Orton has Edge in a chinlock as we come back, but Edge rallies and sends Orton to the apron, spearing him off onto the barrier and rolling him back in for a two count. Orton gets an eyepoke and tags Flair. He drops a knee, but they run into each other, leading to a double KO. Flair hops to the top rope, and that goes as well as youd expect, which leads to Jericho and Orton being tagged in. Jericho controls, working the back with a suplex and some elbows for 2, but Orton gets a backbreaker himself and tags Flair. Flair chops Jericho down as the crowd shouts for Benoit and goes for the figure-four, but Jericho blocks it and tags Benoit, who gets a huge pop. He sends Flair to the floor but gets dragged out after him, leading to Flair being backdropped on the floor. Back in, Flair pokes the eye again and tags Batista, but he immediately gets caught in the Crossface, forcing Orton to break. Jericho in now and he sends Batista reeling with an elbow, causing him to tag Flair. Jericho ducks a chop and gets the Walls on Flair, releasing it to take care of Orton, but he falls to a Batista spinebuster for 2. Orton in, and he applies a chinlock, but does it viciously, giving Jericho almost no room to breathe. Jericho rallies, taking Orton down with a drop sleeper, and Batista tags in, hitting a backbreaker and bending Jericho over his knee. Jericho kicks him to release, but Batista keeps him down and slugs Edge off the apron. Jericho takes advantage with a running enziguri and tags Benoit while Batista tags Orton. Benoit goes after Flair, whos still in the ring, and Orton comes over for the save, but falls to the Rolling Germans and headbutt, but Flair makes the save. Edge spears him out while Batista goes after Jericho. He goes for the flying elbow, but surprise, surprise, Batista ducks and Edge catches it instead. Batista dispatches Jericho and goes for Benoit, but gets suplexed instead, along with Orton. Flair chops Benoit down and goes for the figure-four, but Benoit rolls through it and applies the Sharpshooter, forgetting that Orton is the legal man. Orton takes advantage of this and nails the RKO for the pin at 24:10. Orton celebrates as we fade to black.

Rating: 7.5/10

Thoughts: I loved the finish, as I believe Orton should utilize the RKO like DDP used the Diamond Cutter; a move he can snap off out of nowhere and end the match. The match was fast paced, got the crowd behind them, and everyone had their working boots on, even Flair. The finish might have been predictable, with Jericho hitting Edge and Orton pinning Benoit, but the match as a whole was a very good TV main event.

Final Thoughts: Pretty angle-heavy, and not much to say in-ring wise until the main event. The Diva search continues to be a waste of my time, but they are developing some good feuds that should pay off well at the PPV. Pretty forgettable show overall this week, though.

Thats it for me this week. See you next Monday.
