Preminger, who had already caused commotion with the ratings board over his earlier release The Moon Is Blue tackles Algren's novel head on and spared no expense at showing the horrifying affects that drugs can have on a man. Khrystyne Haje stars in a serious comedy about sex, love, and the games people play. Sex, love, life: Greg Lambert (Lawrence H. Toffler), a risk-averse writer/bartender is afraid of them all. One of his poker buddies goads Greg into attending a party where he will meet Aly (Khyrstyne Haje), "a sure thing." Though Aly lives with someone, Greg is told that her always away-on-business boyfriend leaves her lonely, unsatisfied, and very available for a one-night fling. Sure enough, she and Greg wind up having no-strings-attached sex. Unexpectedly, however, they find themselves drawn to one another. Love or lust? Bolivia
Synopsis:
A starkly realistic story of an illegal immigrant from Bolivia who lands a job with a greasy spoon on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Bolivia poignantly depicts the world of poverty, racism and violence that characterize his newfound reality. Much like Do The Right Thing, tempers flare as discontented working-class people barrel toward tragedy. Shot in a lyrical, black-and-white neo-realistic style, this taut film is an urgent and timely drama of life in Argentina, a nation in crisis that in the last few years has reached unprecedented poverty levels with vast unemployment, bankruptcy, and a shrinking economy.

The Day I Became A Woman
Synopsis:
Simone De Beauvoirs exquisite pronouncement on the social construction of gender in her Second Sex (1949) spoke to generations of women, and of a universal truth beyond countries and cultures. As an example of astonishing visual poignancy, The Day I became a Woman is the globally celebrated debut of Marziyeh Meshkini, a young Iranian filmmaker bringing her rich and diversified national cinema to bear on an enduring global concern, in a new crescendo of memorable subtlety and grace. The Day is repeated in three consecutive episodes, the memorial registers of childhood, adolescence, and old age, when three stages of becoming a woman is culturally manufactured and socially registered. Between Simone De Beauvoir and Marziyeh Meshkini, generations of women (and men), from all cultures around the world, will have much to learn and even more to achieve.

Commentary by Richard Pena (The Film Society of Lincoln Center)
Original Critical Essay by internationally acclaimed artist/author Shirin Neshat

Season of the Witch/There's Always Vanilla
Synopsis:
Season of the Witch:
The future is set for Tony and Michael, owning a neighbor-hood bar and making deals in the mean streets of New York City's Little Italy. For Charlie, the future is less clearly defined. A small-time hood, he works for his uncle, making collections and reclaiming bad debts. He's probably too nice to succeed. In love with a woman his uncle disapproves of and a friend of her cousin, Johnny Boy, a near psychotic whose trouble making threatens them all, he can't reconcile opposing values. A failed attempt to escape moves them all a step closer to a bitter, almost preordained future.
There's Always Vanilla:
Chris Bradley is a young man who returns to his home city of Pittsburgh after several years of drifting and working odd jobs around the country since his discharge from the U.S. Army. Rejecting moving back in with his father and not wanting to return to the family business of manufacturing baby food, Chris meets and shacks up with Lynn, an older woman who works as a model in local TV commercials, and whom becomes his 'sugar mama' of supporting him financially and emotionally, which begins to put a strain on the affair especially when Lynn finds out that she's pregnant and does not feel that Chris would make a responsible father or husband.
