Weekend
Synopsis:
One of Godard's most successfully realized films, Weekend is a devastating attack on and an apocalyptic metaphor for the rapid collapse of Western capitalistic society. Beginning with a coherent plot (that soon goes astray), the story follows a bourgeois couple who travel by car from Paris to the country. The rural landscape they encounter soon becomes a nightmarish vision of chaos and destruction, with the road littered with traffic jams, burning cars, violence and death. A highlight of the film is the ten-minute tracking shot of the mammoth traffic jam that encapsulates all of the anarchy of a society in decay.

 Commentary by Critic David Sterritt

 Mike Figgis on Weekend
Biographies of Jean-Luc Godard, Cinematographer Raoul Coutard, Film Director Mike Figgis and Prof. Colin MacCabe
