Old School Wrestling Weeks 8 & 9
Posted by Jared "JHawk" Hawkins on Jun 18, 2006, 13:49

For those of you who have been wondering why there was no OSW last week, I took a much-needed vacation.  So we're back with a 2-for-1 deal to catch us all up to speed.

Old School Wrestling (June 10, 2006)
Cumberland County Civic Center (Portland, ME)

10:00pm:  Gordon Solie runs over the lineup.

10:01pm:  One fall with a 10-minute time limit:  Paul London and Billy Kidman (w/Ultimo Dragon) vs. Jamie Noble (w/Nidia) and Tajiri (w/"Classy" Freddie Blassie)

Solie makes a note of how funny it is for Noble to team with Tajiri after Noble's anti-Japanese comments last week.  The match itself is absolutely fantastic.  Back-and-forth action all the way, with neither team gaining any sort of clear-cut advantage.  At one point, Noble is sent to the outside of the ring by Kidman, then spits at Ultimo, causing Ultimo to level Noble with a roundhouse kick to the temple.  Referee Tommy Young opts to send Ultimo to the back rather than call for the bell.  The bout continues with neither team able to gain a fall.

Result:  Time Limit Draw.

10:13pm:  Solie flags down Jamie Noble and Freddie Blassie on their way backstage.  Solie asks Noble how he could team with Tajiri after his comments last week.  Noble explains that it's Blassie who's the boss, so the Yakuza is actually American-owned and operated, to which Blassie replies, "We're always looking to expand, and Noble might just fit the bill of what we're looking for."

10:16pm:  One fall with a 10-minute time limit:  Bradshaw vs. Rhyno

Simply a stiff, hard-hitting affair between two bulls.  Following a high impact brawl that took place both in and out of the ring, Bradshaw goes the Clothesline from Hell, only to miss and walk into a Rhyno spinebuster.  Rhyno covers, but the bell rings after the count of two.

Result:  Time Limit Draw

Postmatch, Rhyno argues briefly with referee Nick Patrick, then turns around and lays Bradshaw out with a Gore.

10:29pm:  Solie then interviews Paul Heyman, who says that a fine is probably heading Rhyno's way after that postmatch cheap-shot.  However, he also says it's time to focus on the remainder of the World Title tournament, which as it stands will end in three weeks when OSW is live from Madison Square Garden.  Heyman wishes the remaining five wrestlers luck as we look at the brackets:

Jamie Noble
Hulk Hogan----------Hulk Hogan
                                                   ---Double countout
Andre the Giant-----Andre the Giant
Billy Kidman
                                                                              ---Ted DiBiase
Ted DiBiase---------Ted DiBiase
Jim Duggan
                                                   ---Ted DiBiase
Dino Bravo
Don Muraco---------Don Muraco

Greg Valentine------Greg Valentine
Paul London

Butch Reed
Randy Savage-------Randy Savage

Sakoda---------------Sakoda
Bam Bam Bigelow

Rick Rude
Jake Roberts---------Jake Roberts

10:32pm:  World Title Tournament Quaterfinal Match (one fall with a 20-minute time limit):  Greg "The Hammer" Valentine (w/"The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart) vs. "Macho Man" Randy Savage

Savage controls the tempo early, but he misses a kneedrop and seemingly injures his leg.  Valentine is like a shark smelling blood, going to work relentlessly on the leg for the remainder of the contest.  Valentine continues to work over Savage's leg, but Savage hooks Valentine into an inside cradle, seemingly out of nowhere.

Winner:  Savage via pinfall (7:06).

10:41pm:  As Savage walks to the locker room, Solie is interviewing Ted DiBiase, who will advance automatically to the finals thanks to a semifinal bye.  DiBiase wishes Savage luck with a tinge of sarcasm in his voice "because you're going to need it to even get to the finals, much less beat me".

10:44pm:  One fall with a 10-minute time limit:  "Ravishing" Rick Rude (w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Hardcore Holly

Rude poses to the crowd before the match, and Holly responds by leveling the "Ravishing One" with a dropkick to start the match.  Holly continues his assault, leveling Rude with a series of stiff forearms, then controls the rest of the contest with only brief flurries of offense coming from Rude.  The end comes when Holly runs into the ropes, only for Heenan to trip him, and Holly stumbles forward into a Rude Awakening.

Winner:  Rude via pinfall (5:21).

10:51pm:  One fall with TV time remaining:  "Magnificent" Don Muraco (still wearing a neck brace) vs. "Hacksaw" Butch Reed

Before the match, Reed grabs the mic and says how refreshing it is that finally somebody else in this company is getting fined.  Unfortunately, it appears that once again Reed is allowing his personal beef with Commissioner Heyman to distract him from his job, as he not only seems unable to go after Muraco's neck, but Muraco is able to put him away with a Tombstone piledriver.

Winner:  Muraco via pinfall (4:19).

10:57pm:  Gordon Solie announces that next week, the final quarterfinal match in the World Title tournament will take place as Sakoda meets Jake "The Snake" Roberts.  That leads us to one last look at the brackets:

Jamie Noble
Hulk Hogan----------Hulk Hogan
                                                   ---Double countout

Billy Kidman
                                                                              ---Ted DiBiase

OSW Superstar Challenge (June 17, 2006)
Coliseum (Winston-Salem, NC)

10:00pm:  Gordon Solie welcomes us to the show by hyping tonight's tournament match, Sakoda vs. Jake Roberts.

10:01pm:  One fall with a 10-minute time limit:  Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Rhyno

Bigelow uses his surprising speed and agility to keep Rhyno off-guard early, only to eventually run into the corner on a shoulderblock attempt.  Rhyno begins to work over Bigelow's shoulder, then focuses the attack onto his ribs.  Rhyno sets Bigelow up for the Fore, but Bigelow side steps it, sending Rhyno crashing into the corner.  Bigelow immediately heads to the apron and slingshots himself into the ring, landing on top of Rhyno with a splash.

Winner:  Bigelow via pinfall (6:21).

10:09pm:  Solie shows us highlights of last Sunday's house show in Banger, Maine, in which Jim Duggan, following a match against Rick Rude, was attacked by Rude and Bobby Heenan, only for Duggan to eventually level Heenan with his three point clothesline.

10:12pm:  One fall with a 10-minute time limit:  Andre the Giant  vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan

Before the match begins, Andre and Duggan shake hands, but Bobby Heenan makes his way to the ring and begins badmouthing Duggan.  Duggan immediately grabs Heenan by the lapels, and Andre grabs him from behind and begins to choke Duggan.  Duggan tries to fight out of it in vain, but he soon succumbs to the power of Andre's massive hands.  Andre finally releases the hold as EMTs check on Duggan, followed by Heenan announcing that he will be Andre's new manager.

Result:  No contest.

10:17pm:  As EMTs continue to check on Duggan, Gordon Solie interviews Don Muraco regarding the severity of his neck injury.  Muraco says it's getting better each week, but he simply can't allow himself to go any length of time without competing, which is why he wrestled last week.  With that, Butch Reed attacks from behind, driving a chair into the back of Muraco's head and neck.  Several members of security and Paul Heyman come out to try to break the scene up, and Reed turns around and accidentally blasts Heyman with the chair.  EMTs, having just taken Duggan to the back, now run out to check on the commissioner as Reed is escorted out of the building by security.

10:22pm:   We see a pretaped promo from Jake Roberts, who vows to DDT Sakoda through the mat if necessary to advance in the tournament.

10:25pm:  One fall with a 10-minute time limit:  Dino Bravo (w/Jimmy Hart) vs. "The Rocket" Owen Hart

An even match most of the way, although Bravo does overpower Owen at one point, locking in an extended bearhug.  Hart fights his way out of it and is able to score a couple of near falls, but he makes the mistake of heading to the top rope.  He misses a dropkick, and Bravo quickly takes Owen down with the Side Suplex.

Winner:  Bravo via pinfall (7:47).

10:35pm:  Freddie Blassie speaks for Sakoda via pretaped interview, saying that Roberts doesn't know who he's messing with if he thinks he walking over Sakoda tonight.

10:38pm:  World Title Tournament Quarterfinal Match (one fall with a 20-minute time limit):  Sakoda (w/Freddie Blassie) vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts

Sakoda uses a series of illegal tactics to keep Roberts on the defensive whenever possible, but Roberts fights back each time.  Sakoda finally gains a solid advantage and goes for a suplex, but Roberts blocks it and counters it right into a DDT.

Winner:  Roberts via pinfall (5:20).

10:45pm:  Gordon Solie shows us the updated brackets, announcing the remaining semifinal match will be next week.

Jamie Noble
Hulk Hogan----------Hulk Hogan
                                                   ---Double countout
Andre the Giant-----Andre the Giant
Billy Kidman
                                                                              ---Ted DiBiase
Ted DiBiase---------Ted DiBiase
Jim Duggan
                                                   ---Ted DiBiase
Dino Bravo
Don Muraco---------Don Muraco

Greg Valentine------Greg Valentine
Paul London
                                                    ---Randy Savage
Butch Reed
Randy Savage-------Randy Savage

Sakoda---------------Sakoda
Bam Bam Bigelow
                                                    ---Jake Roberts
Rick Rude
Jake Roberts---------Jake Roberts

10:46pm:  Paul Heyman makes his way to the interview area, head bandaged up, to announce he is suspending Butch Reed for 30 days.  "Attacking wrestlers is bad enough.  Attacking innocent people?  Blasphemy."

10:49pm:  Solie updates us on Duggan's condition, saying he has had some trouble breathing but shouldn't miss any action.

10:50pm:  One fall with TV time remaining:  "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase vs. Bushwhacker Luke (w/Bushwhacker Butch)

Before the match, DiBiase pays referee Earl Hebner $100 to force Butch to the locker room.  Luke is lost without his partner, and DiBiase locks in a Million Dollar Dream in almost no time at all.

Winner:  DiBiase via submission (2:10).

10:54pm:  One fall with TV time remaining:  Rick Rude (w/Bobby Heenan) vs. Paul London

London controls Rude for the bulk of the match, but makes the mistake of ducking his head off of an Irish whip and gets caught with the Rude Awakening neckbreaker.

Winner:  Rude via pinfall in 1:53.

After the match, Rude goes up to a woman and attempts to kiss her, only for the woman to slap him.  Rude goes ballistic and grabs her arm until Jake Roberts attacks him, yelling "Get your hands off my wife!"  They two men brawl back to the entryway until we go off the air.
