Kill! (Criterion Collection)
Synopsis:
In this pitch-black action comedy by Kihachi Okamoto, a pair of down-on-their-luck swordsmen arrives in a dusty, windblown town, where they become involved in a local clan dispute. One, previously a farmer, longs to become a noble samurai. The other, a former samurai haunted by his past, prefers living anonymously with gangsters. But when both men discover the wrongdoings of the nefarious clan leader, they side with a band of rebels who are under siege at a remote mountain cabin. Based on the same source novel as Akira Kurosawa's Sanjuro, Kill! playfully tweaks samurai film convention, borrowing from established chanbara classics and throwing in a little Italian western.

The Features:
New and improved English subtitle translation
 Original theatrical trailer
New essay by film and culture critic Howard Hampton

In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays blue-eyed Jef Costello, a fedora and trench-coat wearing contract killer with samurai instincts. When Jef assassinates a nightclub owner, he finds himself confronted by a series of witnesses, who drop his perfect world into the hands of a persistent police investigator and Jef's shadowy employer, both of whom are determined to put an end to the smooth criminal. A razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture, with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology, maverick director Jean-Pierre Melville's masterpiece defines cool.
Best Price: $21.56 @ DeepDiscountDVD.com

Reluctantly, father and son take in the woman, and, to the family's surprise, the young couple fall in love. But the lord soon reverses his decision and demands the mistress's return. Against all expectations, Isaburo and his son refuse, risking the destruction of their entire family. Director Masaki Kobayashi's film is the gripping story of a peaceful man who finally decides to take a stand against injustice.

Samurai Spy (Criterion Collection)
Synopsis:
Years of warfare end in a Japan unified under the Tokugawa shogunate, and samurai spy Sasuke Sarutobi, tired of conflict, longs for peace. When a high-ranking spy named Koriyama defects from the shogun to a rival clan, however, the world of swordsmen is thrown into turmoil. After Sarutobi is unwittingly drawn into the conflict, he tracks Koriyama, while a mysterious, white-hooded figure seems to hunt them both. By tale's end, no one is who they seemed to be, and the truth is far more personal than anyone suspected. An Obsession

Celebrated Cannes Award-winning director Shinji Aoyama revisits Kurosawas Stray Dog in one of his greatest masterpieces, An Obsession. Like Kurosawa, he weaves his plot around a detective whose stolen gun is used for murder, but from there on in, the two works part company. In Aoyamas world, obsession is the common condition of man, and for his purposes here, it takes the form of a workaholic detective Saga and a homicidal leukemia patient Shimano. Each is driven down the road to destruction, a path on which Aoyama explores the dark night of the human soul. Along the way, Saga is forced to endure the rewards of his own obsessive dehumanized behavior.

Paradise Lost: Child Murders At Robin Hood Hills

This dark odyssey began with the tragic murders of three 8-year-old boys, whose bodies were discovered in a shallow creek in West Memphis, Arkansas. The community demanded justice, and one month later the police delivered: three local teenagers accused of sacrificing the boys as part of a satanic ritual. Despite overwhelming public apathy towards them, defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley steadfastly maintained their innocence. Although the trial produced virtually no physical evidence connecting the defendants to the crime, the town, the jury, and the police felt they had their killers, and used the young men's penchant for heavy metal music, black clothing and fascination with the Wicca religion as evidence of their guilt.

Despite the hardships, Dominic's time on the set is sightened by the presence of Celeste, the beautiful young gaffer who also appears to be at odds with the rest of the crew. But as their relationship intensifies, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems. While the director orchestrates his scenes of terror and fright, behind the walls of the mountain lodge, another film is being made. Secret cameras follow Dominic and Celeste everywhere they go. No one is who they seem to be. Lacey Biclkle is about to make the most horrifying movie of all time, and it may very well cost everyone their careers...and their lives.
