Old School Wrestling (Week 5)
Posted by Jared "JHawk" Hawkins on May 18, 2006, 13:43

Late last week, so early this week to compensate.  Feedback is always appreciated.

Old School Wrestling Superstar Challenge (May 20, 2006)
live from the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

10:00pm:  Gordon Solie welcomes us to the show and explains we will see the first round of the World Title tournament conclude tonight.

10:01pm:  Commissioner Paul Heyman comes out to the interview area and asks Butch Reed to join him.  Reed shows up and immediately blasts Heyman for fining him last week.  Heyman reminds Reed that there are rules and regulations that need followed, and that while he'd really rather have that be the last word, "if anything happens like that again, I will not hesitate to suspend you on the spot".

10:04pm:  World Title Tournament First Round Match (one fall with a 15-minute time limit):  Sakoda (w/"Classy" Freddie Blassie) vs. Bam Bam Bigelow

Bigelow dominates the much-smaller Sakoda for the duration of the match, using his power advantage to toss Sakoda around the ring like a rag doll.  With things firmly in control, Bigelow runs into the ropes, only for Blassie to trip him up with his cane.  The distraction is enough for Sakoda to catch Bigelow with a spin kick that sends Bigelow tumbling over the top rope, his head hitting the apron as he falls to the floor.  Bigelow is unconscious and unable to return to the ring.

Winner:  Sakoda via countout in 5:52.

10:12pm:  As EMTs check on Bigelow's condition, Gordon Solie interviews two newcomers, Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi.  They vow to take the tag team division by storm, and they hope they can dance their way into the fans' hearts while they're doing so.

10:15pm:  One fall with a 10:00 time limit:  "Magnificent" Don Muraco vs. "Hacksaw" Butch Reed

Reed's mind is clearly somewhere else as the match gets underway, as he seems overly distracted.  That enables Muraco to dominate the contest, hitting a Tombstone before Reed can ever get on track.

Winner:  Muraco via pinfall (4:19).

10:21pm:  Gordon Solie gives an update on Bigelow's condition:  Possible concussion, but otherwise alright.

10:22pm:  World Title Tournament First Round Match (one fall with a 15-minute time limit):  "Ravishing" Rick Rude (w/Bobby "The Brain" Heenan) vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts

Before the contest, Rude makes a show of taking off his rove, revealing tights with a woman's face depicted on the crotch and "Ladies love the champ" depicted on the rear.  Roberts makes his way to the ring as highlights of last week's brawl at the interview area are shown.  The match itself is a back-and-forth brawl, with both wrestlers working over their opponent's necks to set up for their respective finishers.  Rude eventually gains control, repeatedly trying to pin the Snake but unable to keep the shoulders on the canvas for three.  Finally, Rude whips Roberts into the ropes but telegraphs the backdrop, and Roberts drives Rude's head straight into the mat with the DDT for the pin.

Winner:  Roberts via pinfall (13:19).

10:38pm:  Gordon Solie updates the brackets:

Jamie Noble
Hulk Hogan----------Hulk Hogan

Andre the Giant-----Andre the Giant
Billy Kidman

Ted DiBiase---------Ted DiBiase
Jim Duggan

Dino Bravo
Don Muraco---------Don Muraco

Greg Valentine------Greg Valentine
Paul London

Butch Reed
Randy Savage-------Randy Savage

Sakoda---------------Sakoda
Bam Bam Bigelow

Rick Rude
Jake Roberts---------Jake Roberts

10:39pm:  Hulk Hogan comes to the interview area to discuss his quarterfinal round match with Andre the Giant next week.  Hogan says he doesn't care how big and bad the giant is, he's going to chop the beanstalk down because the bigger they are, the harder they fall.  Solie seems absolutely confused as to what the hell Hogan's talking about, so he sends it back to the ring.

10:42pm:  One fall with a 10:00 time limit:  The Dream Team {Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Dino Bravo} (w/Jimmy Hart) vs. Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi

The strategy of the Dream Team is apparent from the opening bell: keep the smaller Scotty in and bully him.  They do a tremendous job of keeping Scotty trapped in a corner, but Scotty eventually breaks free and tags in the bigger Rikishi.  Rikishi keeps both men firmly at bay with chops and kicks before grabbing Bravo and dropping him head-first to the mat with an Island Driver.

Winners:  Scotty/Rikishi via pinfall (Rikishi pins Bravo in 7:41).

After the match, Scotty and Rikishi dance to their theme music, which actually gets a good reaction from the crowd.

10:53pm:  Gordon Solie interviews Andre the Giant, who says it's not going to take him long to defeat Hulk Hogan and move on in the title tournament next week.

10:56pm:  One fall with TV time remaining:  Jamie Noble (w/Nidia) vs. Paul London

The match gets almost no time to get started, as the bell rings to signify the end of TV time just as the pace begins picking up.

Result:  Time limit draw (3:20).

Feedback to the hotmail address as usual.
