First off, thanks to everybody who sent in their feedback from last week's premiere edition. It seems to have gone over largely well (aside from the majority of readers preferring Bill Watts as commissioner to Paul Heyman, which was initially considered).
Anyway, it's time for week 2 (and you can read Week 1 here).
OSW Superstar Challenge (April 29, 2006) Olympic Auditorium Los Angeles, CA
10:00pm: Gordon Solie quickly goes over the previously announced lineup (Ultimo Dragon vs. Tajiri, plus the start of the World Title tournament) before quickly turning things over to ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr.
10:01pm: One fall with a 10:00 time limit: The Dream Team {Greg The Hammer Valentine/Canadian Strongman Dino Bravo} (w/The Mouth of the South Jimmy Hart) vs. The Bushwhackers {Bushwhacker Luke/Bushwhacker Butch}
The Bushwhackers make their debut, and they use their unusual tactics (biting and so forth) to keep their more technically sound challengers off guard. The Dream Team finally begins to gain control when Luke misses a charge into the turnbuckle and smacks his knee on the top buckle. The knee becomes the focus for the Dream Team for the rest of the contest. Luke tries in vain to fight off the double teaming, but is unable to. However, the double team comes back to bite the Dream Team, as Valentine and Bravo end up colliding as they attempt to sandwich Luke with a clothesline. As referee Tommy Young tries to remove Valentine from the ring, Butch enters the ring illegally and headlocks his partner, ramming Lukes head into Bravo for a Battering Ram. Young turns around, only seeing Luke covering Bravo for the pin.
Winners: The Bushwhackers via Luke pinning Bravo with the Double Battering Ram in 9:04.
10:12pm: Commissioner Paul Heyman makes his way to the interview area, demanding that Butch Reed come to ringside immediately. Reed does so, only for Heyman to launch into a verbal tirade for failing to show up last week. You could have at least called. Even I have a cellular phone. Heyman fines Reed $1,000. Reed: How can I pay you when I havent wrestled yet? Heyman: Then I guess youre working for free tonight, arent you?
10:15pm: One fall with a 10:00 time limit: Hacksaw Butch Reed vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Its actually a hard to describe brawl, but thats exactly what it is: a brawl. Outside of a beautiful vertical suplex by Duggan, the closest things to wrestling moves are a body slam and a clothesline, each earning Reed a near fall. Duggan makes a comeback, and the two men literally exchange blows with one another until the bell rings.
Result: Time Limit Draw.
10:27pm: Gordon Solie gives us our first look at the World Title Tournament brackets:
Jamie Noble Hulk Hogan
Andre the Giant Billy Kidman
Ted DiBiase Jim Duggan
Dino Bravo Don Muraco
Greg Valentine Paul London
Butch Reed Randy Savage
Sakoda Bam Bam Bigelow
Rick Rude Jake Roberts
10:28pm: Highlights of last weeks main event shown, particularly Tajiri kicking Ultimo Dragon in the head, leading to Sakoda pinning Dragon.
10:30pm: One fall with a 10:00 time limit: Tajiri (w/Classy Freddie Blassie) vs. Ultimo Dragon
Possibly the first truly great match in OSW history, as the two Japanese stars do an incrediblt mix of technical wrestling, martial arts, and high-flying moves. Tajiri counters a rana into a power bomb for 2, then quickly takes Ultimo over with a Northern Lights suplex for 2. Tajiri immediately heads up top, but Ultimo moves out of the way of a moonsault, then floats casually into a magistral cradle for 2. Both men continue to go for pinfall after pinfall, wearing down local referee Johnny Red Shoes Dugan. Blassie hops onto the ring apron, and the distraction leads to Tajiri spraying green mist into Dragons eyes, following it up with a Buzzsaw Kick that sends Ultimo tumbling outside of the ring. Blinded, Ultimo is unable to return to the ring before the count of ten.
Winner: Tajiri via countout in 7:24.
10:39pm: Gordon Solie interviews Ted DiBiase about his match next week with Jim Duggan. While putting over Duggan as a tremendous wrestler and a tough guy, DiBiase says he has ways of making things go his way. He always gets what he wants, and he wants the OSW World Heavyweight Title.
10:42pm: World Title Tournament First Round Match with a 15:00 time limit: Jamie Noble (w/Nidia) vs. Hulk Hogan
Although Hogan is the clear favorite on paper, it is Noble who controls most of the contest, using his superior technical ability to keep Hogan grounded. He continuously works on Hogans knees and back, then locks in his finisher, the Trailer Hitch. Hogan kicks forward out of it, sending Noble face-first into the turnbuckle, then quickly hits the Big Leg Drop for the pin.
Winner: Hogan via pinfall at 7:16.
10:51pm: World Title Tournament First Round Match with a 15:00 time limit: Andre the Giant vs. Billy Kidman
Kidman tries to use his speed to keep the Giant off-guard, but he mostly just bounces off the Giant. Andre finally catches Kidman, using a series of chops and head butts that send Kidman flying across the ring. Kidman somehow kicks out of Andres elbow drop, but hes not so lucky to kick out of Andres sitdown splash just seconds later.
Winner: Andre via pinfall in 5:34.
10:59pm: Time is short, but Gordon Solie is quick to show us the remaining brackets, noting the next two matches are next week.
Jamie Noble Hulk Hogan Hulk Hogan
Andre the Giant Andre the Giant Billy Kidman
Ted DiBiase Jim Duggan
Dino Bravo Don Muraco
Greg Valentine Paul London
Butch Reed Randy Savage
Sakoda Bam Bam Bigelow
