The Dames Diatribe on WWE Raw December 15th, 2003
At last nights Armageddon PPV, Evolution ended up with all the gold after Orton defeated RVD for the IC Title, Flair & Batista were entered into Tag Team Turmoil at the very last second to capture the Tag straps and Triple H regained his World Heavyweight Title.
Tonights show kicks off with all four members of Evolution at the top of the ramp, brandishing their gold. Triple H gets on the mic and lets everyone know that now that theyve got all the gold, theyve got all the say around here.
The intro hits and were greeted by J.R. & The King who let us know that a rematch has been made by Eric Bischoff for Battle of the Sexes 2. Also on tonights card is a 6 man tag match as RVD, HBK and Goldberg face HHH, Flair & Batista.
Trish Stratus & Lita vs. Chris Jericho & Christian
Match Background: Bah, instead of being lazy and cutting and pasting the intro plus some extra stuff to add to tonights match, Im going to be even MORE lazy and just tell you to read last nights Match Background and what occurred to catch up. The link is at the top. So there.
The Match: Trish continues to glare at Jericho as he makes his entrance tonight and Jericho has a concerned look on his face still. Trish and Jericho go face to face in the ring with Trish doing all of the trash talking. Jericho, looking ashamed, just turns around and tags out to Christian.
Christian looks to spar with Trish and goes to taunt Lita, but ends up getting slapped by the redhead and Trish rolls him up for a two count. Christian grabs Trish and simply shoves her hard, down and away into her corner. Lita comes in, but Christian attacks her before she even steps through the ropes. He talks smack to her in the corner about her having her chance, but Lita ends up fighting back and gets on Christians back to rake his eyes. Jericho pulls her off by the hair and comes into the match legally, body slamming her immediately. Jericho tags out to Christian, who tosses her face first into the top turnbuckle and poses for the crowd.
Christian sets Lita up on the top turnbuckle for a back suplex, but Lita back elbows Christian down to the mat. As Christian stands up, Lita sets up for the moonsault and goes for it. She overshoots it, so she lands on top of Christians face/head and almost re-injures herself. She immediately tags out to Trish who comes off the top with a cross body for a two count. Lita gets back up and goes after Christian as well, but he ends up connecting with a double clothesline. Christian goes for the cover on Trish, but picks her up before the three count to administer more punishment. Christian tells Jericho this is for you, buddy and gives Trish the Unprettier. Christian goes for the cover, but Jericho pulls him off to a pop. Jericho instructs the ref to end this match immediately because he refuses to continue. Christian tries to ask Jericho whats going on, but Jericho shoves him onto his ass to an even bigger pop. A Y2J chant starts up as Christian is bewildered as to what the hell is going on.
Winners: No Contest
As officials and referees check on Trish, Eric Bischoff power walks down to the ring, visibly upset and asks Jericho what in the world is up with him. Jericho cuts him off and tells him to shut up before saying do you know how much of a jackass you are, Bischoff? Jericho then tells him that hes been trying to tell him all week that he didnt want this kind of a match. He points down at Trish and says is this what you wanted, you stupid son of a bitch?
Jericho begins to walk up the ramp when Bischoff gets back on the mic and tells him that he made the match to appease HIM. Bischoff says that if hes angry and frustrated, hes going to book him in a match later on tonight against someone else whos angry and frustratedKane.
My Opinion: Although Im not sure if this is the babyface turn weve all been expecting, it certainly was the moment we were waiting for. Jericho defending Trish, standing up to both Christian and Bischoff are all babyface things, which is what this angle is supposedly leading to. The fans were definitely ready, willing and able to cheer Jericho, so I cant say that I blame them.
Also, the decision to run this angle on Raw instead of on the PPV turned out to be a good one as more people obviously tune into Raw. It also gave Jericho more motivation to stand up to Bischoff, since he thought he wouldnt have to go through with this match again after last night, only to find out he was booked into it again. From here, lets see where it goes.
The match itself was basically Christian vs. Lita & Trish and with Lita almost re-breaking her neck on that moonsault, Id say this one was a DUD.
Eric Bischoff is still in the ring and calls out Mick Foley. Hes got a proposal to change Raw forever, so he wants Foley to come to the ring now.
After a commercial break, Foley comes to the ring and tells Bischoff that before he listens to his idea, hes going to tell him his. In two weeks, hes going to present his case to the WWE Board of Directors as to why Stone Cold should be back on Raw and hes going to have Austin with him in order to plead his case.
Bischoff begins to speak and tells Foley that the people all love himbut they dont love him as the Raw Co-GM. They love him as the Hardcore Legend that we all came to know throughout the years. Bischoff says that the reason the fans were so ecstatic when he was back together with The Rock last week, it was because they saw a glimpse of the old Mick Foley.
Bischoff then introduces an excellent Mick Foley tribute video package, set to Stainds So Far Away.
After the video package, which draws a sizeable Foley chant from the crowd, Bischoff tells Foley that what they really want is Foley back in the ring. Foley tells Bischoff that he will not be backed into a match when its not under his terms. Bischoff knew that Foley would say that, so he came up with a proposition. After the six months Bischoff spent as Co-GM with Austin, he promised himself that he would never allow himself to share power with anyone again. He proposes a match between Mick Foley and Randy Orton for tonight. Should Randy Orton lose, Bischoff will quit the GM position tonight. However, Foley must put up the same stipulation should he lose.
After contemplating it for a second, Mick Foley turns it down because he says he knows what will happen. Evolution will come down and cost him the match and Foley will have to leave. So, in order for this match to take place, hes going to require a couple of things. First off, referee Earl Hebner must be the ref for the match and Evolution and Eric Bischoff will be barred from ringside. If they come out to the ring at all, Foley automatically wins. Bischoff agrees to it and they shake on it. After the stips are decided upon, Foley uses his authority to make the match between himself and Randy Orton an IC Title match and walks back up the ramp.
My Two Cents: Any chance Mick Foley had of winning the match disappeared, in my opinion, the moment he made it an IC Title match. The purpose of this match seems to be to give Orton an undeserved big win over another legend while allowing Foley to put him over the way only Foley can. The banning of Evolution and Bischoff from ringside was a nice touch, but if Foley was truly a smart man, he would have had EVERYONE banned from ringside.
As for the return of Austin, since it just cant be so cut and dry for Austin to return, I predict that when it comes time for Austin to plead his case, hes going to tell the Board of Directors that he doesnt want to be back on Raw because he doesnt deserve it, leading to some sort of angle where Austin needs to be convinced that he has to come back for whatever reason.
Booker T & Maven vs. Matt Hardy & Mark Henry
Match Background: Last night at Armageddon, Booker T defeated Mark Henry in a one on one match. Later on that night, it was supposed to have been Maven vs. Matt Hardy, but Batista ended up powerbombing Maven prior to the match beginning, so it never took place. Matt Hardy, ever the opportunist, took it upon himself to cover Maven for a mock three count and declare himself the winner.
The Match: Matt Fact: Matt Always Utilizes Toilet Seat Covers. Wowthe creative team is definitely reaching now.
Maven and Matt Hardy start it out with Maven connecting with the MAVEKICK~! immediately and some mounted punches. Hardy shoves Maven off and into the corner before charging at him. Maven moves out of the way as Hardy gets closer, only to get clotheslined by Mark Henry, who was standing on the apron.
Henry tags in and shoves him into their corner before tossing him across the ring, literally. Maven uses his power with clubbing blows and tags out to V1. Maven tries to fight back, but ends up in the Side Effect and a pinfall attempt, but Booker T breaks it up. Hardy puts on a surfboard stretch, but Maven gets up and fights out of it, only to get clotheslined down. Matt Hardy works over Maven in the corner and goes for a powerbomb, only for Maven to counter out of it and hit a side Russian leg sweep. Maven makes the tag to Booker T, who comes in and is in complete control against Matt Hardy. He knocks Henry off the apron and spinebusters Hardy down. SPINAROONIE~!
Mark Henry charges at Booker T, but Booker ducks and Henry goes flying over the top. Maven hits a top rope cross body onto Henry as Matt Hardy looks for the Twist of Fate on Booker. Booker gets out of it and hits the axe kick (called the scissors kick by J.R.) for the pinfall.
Winners: Booker T & Maven
My Opinion: The majority of the work done in the match was between Maven and Matt Hardy, which may be a bit of a consolation for having their PPV match scrapped. Booker only came in for the hot tag and Henry stood on the apron for all of about 30 seconds or so. The match was very short, being on Raw naturally, but the finish was clean and the work involved was pretty crisp. *
In the back, The Coach is set to interview Goldberg and ask what it feels like not to be the Champion anymore.
After we come back from a commercial break, The Coach is set to talk to Goldberg outside of his dressing room, but upon seeing The CoachGoldberg slams the door. Coach takes exception to this and barges into his dressing room, closing the door behind him. A ruckus occurs and suddenly, Coach is thrown out of the locker room, literally, by Goldberg.
La Resistance comes to the ring for a match, but decide to get on THE STICK~! first. Dupree does a majority of the mic work, telling the fans that their precious Rocky will not be here tonight, since La Resistance gave him a major beating. He did, however, say something that really bothered them. They want to make it perfectly clear that they are not Fi Fi in anyway. Conway then compares Foley to America: loud, obnoxious and always sticking its nose where it doesnt belong.
Im surprised they didnt mention the capture of Saddam Hussein at all.
Anyway, Goldbergs music starts up and the former champion heads to the ring with a purpose. Conway looks to meet him head on, using the French flag as a weapon, but gets kicked down by Goldberg. He comes into the ring and immediately spears the hell out of Dupree, only for Conway to come in and get speared as well. Goldberg picks up Conways limp body and delivers the Jackhammer (although he almost lost him in mid air) to a big pop. Goldberg picks up the French flag and walks over to a fan who just HAPPENED to have an American flag with them. Goldberg breaks the French flag over his knee and waves around the US Flag in the ring to a pop.
Eric Bischoff then comes out and tells Goldberg that hes out of control. After beating up his top announcer Coach and wrecking havoc on HIS show, Bischoff is removing him from the active roster for 30 days. In essence, its a suspension.
This was probably done to keep Goldberg away from the World Title scene for a few weeks at the very least and hey, Hanukkah is around the corner, so Goldberg wont have any problems getting any time off this year. (For the record, a few years back in WCW, Goldberg refused to work around this time of year for religious reasons. I wasnt trying to make a joke, so there.)
Jim Ross tears Eric Bischoff a new one after hearing this, 30 days off the active list my ASS!, but King calms him down so we dont have another announcer feud.
In the back, Mick Foley asks Shawn Michaels if being in the ring again really is as addicting as they say it is. Michaels tells him that after facing Triple H at last years Summerslam, hed never believe that hed be on the full time roster again. He then tells a lousy Godfather 3 joke (just when I thought I was outthey pull me BACK IN!). Foley seems to warm up to the idea and asks Michaels to pass him his flannel shirt.
NFL footage is briefly shown as the Denver Broncos runningback, Clinton Portis, wore a replica of the World Heavyweight Title by the sidelines as well as in the locker room recently. WWE fail to mention that the NFL announcers pretty much mocked professional wrestling when Porter was playing up holding his title. Also, during last nights Survivor Finale, Jon Dalton (Johnny Fairplay, a heelish contestant who loves pro wrestling) mentioned his affinity for pro wrestling and was mocked on the air for it. With the way angles have been booked in the past few years and Vince McMahons attitude towards the media, its no mystery why wrestling is considered a joke amongst the press and mainstream audiences.
Due to Bill Goldbergs suspension, Lillian Garcia announces that the following match will be a handicap match.
Rob Van Dam & Shawn Michaels vs. Batista, Ric Flair & Triple H
Match Background: RVD has had his share of problems with all 4 members of Evolution in the past, most recently with Randy Orton, losing his IC title to him last night. Shawn Michaels naturally has had a history with Evolution, having feuded with Triple H for the better part of last year, having feuded with both Flair & Orton this year and most recently, defeating Batista last night at Armageddon.
The Match: The babyfaces come down first, so lets HIT THE MUSIC~!
EVOLUTION WONT DO TWO JOBS CLEAN~!
RVD looks to start the match off against Batista, but Batista wants Michaels. Michaels tags in and Batista seems a bit surprised and backs up a bit. Batista gets the first attack in (FIRST ATTACK BONUS~!), but Michaels leapfrogs over him and punches all three members of Evolution, knocking Flair & Trips off of the apron. This frustrates Batista, who tries to take a moment to simmer down by talking to the older members.
Batista charges at HBK, but HBK gets a drop toe hold. He puts on a front face lock, but Batista picks him up and drives him into the heel corner. Triple H comes in and he gets into a slugfest with HBK who comes out on the winning end with left hands. The champ BUMPS OFF A PUNCH~! and Im pleased.
Michaels continues to work over HHH with left hands and tags in RVD who works over the left arm of the champ. HHH gets a thumb to the eye and tags out to Flair, who gets spin kicked and Michaels comes back in. They trade chops in the corner, leading to HBK backdropping Flair, but in CLASSIC Flair fashion, he begs for mercy, only to poke Michaels in the eye.
Flair chops at Michaels again and goes for a back suplex, but Michaels lands on his feet and attempts a roll up. HHH nails Michaels as he heads towards him during the roll upbut for the second time, Flair gets hurt by the ropes somehow and he tags out to HHH. The replay shows that the rope hit him in the mouth/jaw area.
Triple H comes back in against Michaels and another slugfest ensues. Michaels bounces off the ropes, but HHH hits the high knee and tags in Batista. Batista bowls over Michaels a few times for a few nearfalls and tags Flair back in. Flair whips Michaels into the corner hard and punches away at him with rights and lefts. Flair goes to the top rope, but naturally, gets tossed off. Flair tags out to Batista, but HBK is able to tag out to RVD who connects with a spin kick, a wheel kick and one for HHH. RVD knocks Batista into the official, who ends up squashed in the corner. With the referee still behind Batista, RVD goes for his shoulder thrusts and goes for the third shoulder tacklebut Batista moves out of the way, causing RVD to nail the ref directly.
Batista goes for his sit out powerbomb, but RVD rakes the eyes to get out and hits his spinning legdrop. He connects with Rolling Thunder and goes to the top rope, hitting the Five Star Frogsplash on him. Flair gets the ref out of position as HHH comes back into the ring and nails the Pedigree on RVD. Batista makes the cover after a long pause and its ONETWONO!
Flair gets into the ring and puts the Figure Four on RVDand RVD SELLS it! As J.R. screams RVD is going to tap out!we go to a fucking commercial.
When we come back, RVD is being worked over by HHH in the ring, whos still working on his leg. RVDs selling tonight is SPECTACULAR compared to the lazy performance he put on last night. Flair chops away at RVD in the corner now, but RVD hooks on a sleeper, only to get back suplexed. Batista comes in now and knocks the hell out of RVD with a pair of clotheslines. HHH comes in, but RVD is able to hit him with a spin kick and attempt a tag to Michaels. Flair comes in and cuts off RVD. RVD hits a spin kick and finally makes the hot tag to Michaels, who gets the crowd pumping and once again HHH BUMPS OFF PUNCHES~! Michaels hits a flying forearm, nips up, nails an atomic drop and hits a flying forearm on Batista! He slams HHH down and hits his top rope elbow. He starts setting up for Sweet Chin Music, but Batista stops him and hits his sit out powerbomb! RVD knocks Batista to the outside and then hits a pescado over the top rope onto both Batista and Flair.
This leaves HHH & HBK alone in the ring and HHH is up first. He goes for the Pedigree, but Michaels backdrops out of it. He goes for Sweet Chin Music, but HHH catches it! HHH goes for a clothesline, but Michaels ducks underneath and nails Sweet Chin Music for the pin!
Winners: Shawn Michaels & Rob Van Dam
My Opinion: Well, I hate to say I told you so, but last night during my Armageddon Diatribe, I said that Michaels would most likely be the guy next in line for HHH, considering how good hes been in the ring lately, compared to everyone else. Besides, its time for HHH to start cycling through his opponents again.
Anyway, this match was better than anything that was on last nights card and aside from the abrupt commercial break, I enjoyed the hell out of it. The work was pretty crisp, RVD sold his ass off and worked the hot tag beautifully. Michaels was seen as a credible threat to the champion, all is good in the world. I would have rated this match higher, but that commercial break came at the worst possible time. **1/2.
Rico (w/Miss Jackie) vs. Jon Heidenreich
Match Background: Last night on Heat, Rico defeated Jon Heidenreich with a neckbreaker.
The Match: Jon Heidenreich comes out to total silence and entrance music that is so generic, he makes Garrison Cade & Mark Jindrak look like The Rock & Hulk Hogan in terms of charisma.
J.R. immediately talks football credentials when talking about Heidenreich. Rico immediately goes for a waistlike, which is reversed by Jon, but Rico bends over, literally, grossing Jon H out. He clotheslines him down and connects with a back elbow before putting on a bear hug. Rico begins enjoying the embrace and Jon H tosses him away again. Rico pokes him in the eye, connects with a spin kick and a kick to the head before landing some stomps. He gets a legdrop and an elbow for a two count, using some more of his over the top mannerisms again. Rico kicks Jon H in the head in the corner and then goes for a unique cover for two.
Jon H hits a swinging neckbreaker and puts on a chinlock, only for Jon H gets out of it, only for Rico to hook on a sleeper. A boring chant is now audible as Heidenreich fights back and hits a side slam. He connects with a pair of clotheslines as J.R admits that hes not a catch as catch can wrestler, unrefined, which is another way of saying hes a hoss. Rico gets up and goes for his neckbreaker, but Jon H counters and hits a shoulder tackle. The fans chant boring again, as Jon H is in control. Heidenreich whips Rico into the corner the ref was in, so ref Charles Robinson has to get out of the way quickly, allowing Jackie Gayda to drape Jons head over the top ropes. This gives Rico the opening he needs to hit his neckbreaker and the match is mercifully over.
Winner: Rico
My Opinion: Who the hell decided this match should be on Raw? Keep it on Heat, where it belongs. Neither guy has heat (or at least, the kind of heat you should have) and this match sucked the life out of the crowd. Jon Heidenreich doesnt deserve to be on my TV screen and neither does Rico with his stupid, silly gimmick.
If you dont understand what Im saying WWE, pay attention. GET THEM OFF MY TV SCREEN! 1/2* and thats ALL on Rico.
In the back, Chris Jericho knocks on the Womens Locker Room door in order to talk to Trish. She comes out with an ice pack on her neck and Jericho asks her if shes ok. Trish tells him that shes NOT ok and as far as shes concerned, now that she knows that the real Jericho is an asshole, she never wants him to talk to her ever again. Jericho is distraught as Trish slams the door in his face and goes back inside.
Yes, this IS the usual boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girls, boy regains girl story that youve all come to know and love. And MARK MY WORDSseeing as how WWE likes to rip off of movies when it comes to their love stories and dialogue, you will hear the words I made that bet before I knew you on your TV screens once again.
Chris Jericho vs. Kane
Match Background: Earlier tonight, Chris Jericho told Bischoff off, so he made a match for Jericho against Kane. These two havent had issues in a LONG time, but around this time 3 years ago, Jericho and Kane were in a feud over spilled coffee. No shit.
The Match: Kane goes right after Jericho, who bails from the ring and dropkicks Kane in the leg as he comes back in. He targets the leg and uses his speed to avoid attacks by Kane for a few moments until the big man nails a right hand. Jericho goes back to the leg as soon as hes away from danger and charges at Kanegetting lifted up into the air and slammed down.
Kane punches away at Jericho again, choking him in the corner and continuing the onslaught. Kane whips him across the ring and EATS BOOT~! on the charge, so Jericho gets on the top rope and hits a missile dropkick for two. Jericho goes for his bulldog (which Kane sells horribly) and goes for the Lionsault. Kane catches Jericho by the throat during the Lionsault and goes for a chokeslam, but Jericho sunset flips over Kane and tries to hook on the Walls of Jericho. Kane shoves him off and clotheslines him in the corner before hitting a side slam on the young Canadian.
Kane press slams him to the outside, where he follows, only to ram Jericho into the security rail. Jericho grabs the timekeepers chair, but gets tossed back into the ring. Jericho goes back out and when Kane goes to grab him by the hair, Jericho nails him in the head with a chair.
Winner: Kane via DQ
After the match, Jericho goes for another chair shot, but Kane hits a big boot. He puts him in the Tree of Woe and begins to choke him with some cables. Kane then chokeslams Jericho down and goes to the back. Christian comes down the ramp to seemingly help Jericho out, but after making sure Jericho was on his feet, he shoves him down as payback for earlier.
My Opinion: While I didnt care for the match too much (it was your typical big man vs. little man match up), the angle that followed it made sure that it was clear that Jericho is the babyface and Christian is the heel here without getting into blows. I thought it was very effective and Im intrigued as to how this will play out in the upcoming weeks. Kane and Jericho have had better matches together, but both were booked well tonight. *1/4
Maven and Victoria went to go visit some troops earlier today.
In Bischoffs office, Randy Orton has come to see him to talk strategy about the upcoming Foley match. Bischoff tells Orton to concentrate on Foley and ignore the locker room rumors. Orton flips out at the mere THOUGHT of locker room rumors, claiming that everyone is jealous of him. Bischoff tells Orton that he has to step out of the shadow and show that hes the man around here. Orton is pumped up and ready for tonights match now.
Why do I have a feeling that this pep talk is going to be the catalyst for Orton turning on HHH eventually?
In the most productive walking segment in years, as Mick Foley walks in the backstage area, some wrestlers wish him good luck, such as Val Venis, Lance Storm, Hurricane, Rosey, The Dudleys (who tell him that they want a tag title shot after he makes sure hes GM after tonight) and Tommy Dreamer of all people. He also passes by Shawn Michaels and lets him know that hes got a World Title match with Triple H on Raw in two weeks in Michaels hometown, San Antonio.
HIT THE MUSIC!
EVOLUTIONS TITLE BELTS ALL GLEAM~!
Randy Orton comes to the ring first, awaiting Foleys entrance. Foley comes down the ramp to a pop and gets in the ring. The crowd chants for Foley, but Foley jumps out of the ring and smacks himself literally, to seemingly pep himself up. The crowd is pumped for Foley, but he keeps circling the ring. He goes to the bottom of the rampand just walks away, back up.
Orton follows up the ramp, confused, as we get a shot of Mick in the backstage area. Foley goes into his Co-GM office and gets his clothes. Bischoff confronts Foley and asks him if hes leaving. If he leaves, hes done, hes no longer Co-GM, no Outside Consultant, nothing. Foley just walks away, towards the parking lot, but gets stopped by Orton.
Orton stops him and asks him if hes really leaving. Orton sees a tear in his eyeand asks him if hes going to cry. Legends dont cry according to Orton. Legends dont walk away either. He calls Foley a coward, but it doesnt phase him. Orton spits RIGHT IN FOLEYS EYEwhich causes Foley to drop his belongings and walk out of the arena as the show comes to a close
My Two Cents: This was possibly the worst thing that WWE could have done tonight. They build up a match, they have the announcers talk incessantly about it and then they pull a bait and switch on us, no doubt pissing off tons of fans who were waiting to see it. I didnt think Foleys first match back should have been on a Raw in a throwaway match against Randy Orton, but if youre going to advertise something, go through with it.
As for why Foley left, Im sure hell give us an explanation and itll be a heartfelt, excellent promo, the way Foley does them. My guess is that he remembered what it was like being in front of a live crowd and how great it isand how often he was away from his family and how it caused personal rifts in his relationships. Its going to take a hell of a lot to get Foley back into the ring, which will make it that much sweeter when he really does, which will most likely be at Wrestlemania.
Overall: The bait and switch really pissed me off, but I understood why it was done. WWE is once again planning ahead, which is always good, setting up a title match two weeks from now as well as Austins plea to the Board of Directors. The handicap match was booked well and was the best match all week, PPV included, which is also good from a viewers stand point, but Im sure those who spend 35 bucks yesterday werent pleased.
Jerichos face turn is coming along nicely as eventually, hell win over Trish, most likely at Wrestlemania if theyre going to extend it for more than a month or so. Now that Foley is supposedly gone, Bischoff will be left to his own devices, which can result in great shows (three weeks ago) or mediocre shows (Raw Roulette). Whether or not WWE will try and make SOMEONE ELSE a Co-GM with him remains to be seen, but personally, I think its a mistake. Either get rid of Bischoff or keep him on and stop playing around with the structure system.
Well see whatll happen next week
Til then,
The Dames, Damian Gonzalez
